Description: Link-level, hourly speed aggregates and trip counts for vehicles across Great Britain (April 2024). Derived from 2 billion matched GPS observations across Great Britain, collected by Compass IoT. Each product is aggregated from raw 10-second pings map-matched to OS MasterMap road links using Hidden Markov Models.

Origin density map
Each hexagon (H3 resolution 6 - edges ~4km wide) is coloured by the number of trips starting there. Darker hexagons indicate more journey origins, showing where vehicle movement is most concentrated. A random noise has been added to the data visualisation.
Fleet composition
The breakdown of 1.6 M tracked vehicles by type, with private cars, and heavy goods vehicles showing the composition of the dataset.
Speed · travel time · distance distributions
Each shape shows the spread of speeds, journey times, and distances recorded for that vehicle type. A wider shape means more trips at that value.
Speed density by hour of day
Each ridge shows the distribution of speeds recorded in one hour of the day, stacked from midnight at the top to 11 pm at the bottom. A peak further to the right means vehicles were typically travelling faster at that hour.
Speed density joy plot
Trip volume by hour of day
How many trips are made at each hour of the day, split by vehicle type and comparing weekdays with weekends.
Leeds road link speeds
Average speed recorded on each road link across the Leeds area, derived from GPS traces. Each link is coloured by its typical speed — with brighter colours indicating faster speeds. A random noise has been added to the data visualisation.
